(Reuters) -Waymo is a self-driving car-technology company owned by Alphabet Inc. On Thursday, ByteDance’s mobile video app TikTok was joined by ByteDance to join the other companies who will no longer attend the Consumer Electronics Show next month. This is due in part to increasing COVID-19 infections.
Waymo announced in a blog posting that it plans to take part virtually at the Las Vegas event. This annual gathering attracts over 180,000 participants from all parts of the world and allows them to share emerging technology with each other, while also allowing them to make business connections.
TikTok stated it will host a virtual event to welcome advertisers and partners.
Many other companies, including Facebook’s parent Meta Platforms Inc. Twitter Inc (NYSE:), Lenovo Group (OTC:), AT&T Inc (NYSE:) and Amazon.com Inc (NASDAQ:) dropped in-person attendance plans earlier this week, saying they would not send employees out of caution over the spread of Omicron.
Omicron-related COVID-19 virus was discovered for the first time last month in Hong Kong, southern Africa. It has raised global concern about an emerging new strain of this virus. Coronavirus infections are on the rise wherever Omicron is highly contagious, prompting new restrictions in many countries.
