MOSCOW, (Reuters) – Russia seeks to avoid conflicts with Ukraine and other countries in the West. This was stated by President Vladimir Putin Thursday.

Putin declared at his annual news conference that “This (our) preferred choice is not for us, and we don’t want this.”

Putin stated that Russia received an overall positive response to its security proposals this month, and that talks would begin in Geneva early next year.

He stated, “I wish the development will proceed along this path.”

Russia rejected U.S. allegations that Russia might be preparing an invasion against Ukraine by placing tensofThousands of Russian troops within striking distance of its border. Russia says that it requires pledges from NATO, including the promise not to engage in NATO military activities in Eastern Europe. This is because its security has been threatened by Ukraine’s increasing ties with the West alliance as well as the possibility of NATO missiles being deployed on Ukrainian soil.
