OTTAWA (Reuters), – Canada is reporting that it has not found any evidence of a fungus on fresh potatoes. The Canadian Food Inspection Agency stated Friday that this could mean that exports to the United States, starting from Prince Edward Island, can resume.

Canada stopped all shipments of November potatoes after discovering that two farms had been infected by fungus. It was this first case in 21 years. Canada halted all fresh potato imports from this province until the United States took additional action.

The CFIA responded by conducting a nationwide survey that found no evidence of potato warts in areas not quarantined. According to it, this information was what Washington wanted.

This was sent to U.S. The Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service provided this information earlier today. It should provide the assurances that fresh potato trade can resume safely,” CFIA stated in a statement.

CFIA claimed it had quarantined two farms and was taking mitigation measures.

It stated that “the trade in potatoes from fields not quarantined is safe” and did not present a pest-free risk.

The U.S. has not sent anyone. The Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service could not immediately be reached for comment. Friday in America is considered a holiday.

The CFIA states that potato wart can reduce yields, but does not pose a risk to health or safety.

Prince Edward Island was responsible for 20% of the 2020 national harvest. This crop contributes to more than C$1,000,000 ($781million) each year to the economy of the province.
