This was the first Russian revenue-based fine.
Moscow increased its pressure on tech companies this year. This campaign was criticised by Russian authorities as an effort to tighten control of the internet. They claim it threatens corporate and individual freedom.
Google stated in an email that it will review the ruling of the court before taking any further actions.
Russia has been imposing small penalties on foreign tech companies all year. Friday’s penalty, however, marks the first time that Russia has taken a percentage from a Russian company’s annual turnover. This greatly increases the amount of the fine.
Although it did not give the exact percentage, Reuters calculations indicate that it is just above 8%.
Russia ordered all companies to remove posts that promote drug abuse or dangerous pastimes. It also requested information about homemade explosives and weapons.
Google is at odds to Moscow over a variety of issues.
Russia requested that RT restore its access to German-language channels, a state-backed broadcaster.
A sanctioned Russian businessman won victory against Google last week in court. This could lead to another large fine for the tech giant.
Moscow also requested that thirteen U.S.-based technology companies (Google and Meta Platforms included) be established on Russian soil before January 1, or risk being banned or restricted.
