TAIPEI, Reuters – Taiwanese legislators said Friday that Japan and Taiwan had agreed to “all around cooperation” in semiconductors. They also agreed to meet regularly, the lawmakers stated. This was after de facto talks between both governments.

Japan and Chinese-claimed Taiwan do not have official diplomatic ties. However, both countries share close informal relations. They also have concerns about China and its military actions near them.

Two senior legislators from Taiwan’s Democratic Progressive Party, (DPP), and Japan’s Liberal Democratic Party, (LDP) attended the talks online. They were held following initial consultations that took place in August.

Chiu Chih-wei (DPP Lawmaker) told reporters chips were more than a problem for Japan’s industry. The Japanese have, just like all other nations, faced shortages of semiconductors. It was also a matter of security against China.

“Both countries agreed that there would be more cooperation in future on chip supply chains. They will have a complete framework, system to have all around cooperation on semiconductors.

Japanese officials confirmed that they were in agreement with Taiwan’s side about the need to work together to create resilient supply chains for semiconductors.

According to Akimasa, Akimasa Ishikawa (a Liberal Democratic Party lawmaker) said that while we must do all possible to address the current shortage of semiconductors, the possibilities for cooperation need expanding. One of the biggest challenges is how these three countries will work together to respond to China’s high-tech investment.

Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co Ltd announced last month that it will build a $7B chip plant in Japan. Sony (NYSE:) Group. TSMC (NASDAQ:) is a significant Apple supplier and produces some the best semiconductors.

Lo Chihcheng (head of DPP’s International Department), who is also a top DPP lawmaker, said that they had agreed to continue their dialogue.

Japan also reiterated support for Taiwan joining the 11-member Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership or CPTPP. Lo added that China was seeking to do so as well.

Lo however stated that the talks did not include military topics.

Japan’s Kyodo news agency claimed that U.S. military and Japanese forces have drafted plans for joint operations in the event of an emergency on Taiwan. The announcement came amid increasing tensions between China, Taiwan, and Japan.

Japan’s government indicated that it was more aggressive in its stance against China’s aggression towards Taiwan in October. This suggested it would look at options and be prepared for various scenarios.
