Jerome Miron, USA TODAY Sports Mandatory Credit(Reuters) – After postponing Monday’s scheduled 14-game game schedule, the National Hockey League (NHL), has pushed back its return to the holiday break. This was to give the league and the teams enough time to take COVID-19 assessments and evaluate their abilities to compete.
The NHL announced Friday in a statement that 64 more games were delayed, and it will resume regular season play on Tuesday.
“In order for the league to have an adequate chance to analyze leaguewide testing results, and to assess clubs’ readiness of playing, the date for the resumption will be moved back an additional day,” said the league.
“Teams are expected to return to practice on December 26th and that league will update them by Sunday afternoon.”
It was initially planned that the league would be closed from Friday through Sunday during Christmas, but the NHL and the players’ union decided this week to move the closure forward to Wednesday-Saturday due to rising coronavirus cases.
COVID-19 fears mean that NHL players cannot compete in the Beijing Winter Games’ men’s ice hockey competition. According to the league, it will use Olympic time to move postponed games.
