China replaces Xinjiang Communist Party chief Chen -Breaking

BEIJING (Reuters – China has replaced Chen Quanguo who, as chief of the Communist Party in the Xinjiang area oversaw a security crackdown on ethnic Uyghurs. This was in the name and spirit of combating religious extremism.

Chen, who has held his position since 2016, will now be in a different role. Ma Xingrui (the governor of Guangdong Province’s coast economic powerhouse Guangdong province), will replace him, according to the official Xinhua News Agency. The official Xinhua News Agency did not provide any other information.

According to United Nations research and human rights activists, more than one million Muslims are being held in camps in the Xinjiang region of western China. China denies any abuse and describes the camps as “vocational centres” that are designed to fight extremism. In late 2019, it said that all those in the camps had “graduated”.

Chen (66) is a member China’s politburo. He is widely believed to be the top official in charge of the security crackdown in Xinjiang. The United States sanctioned Chen last year.

On Thursday, U.S. President Joe Biden signed into law https://www.reuters.com/world/us/biden-signs-bill-clamp-down-products-chinas-xinjiang-2021-12-23 a ban on imports from Xinjiang over concerns about forced labour, provoking an angry Chinese condemnation.

Some Uyghurs have been regarded as genocide by foreign parliaments and lawmakers.
