TOKYO (Reuters), Several domestic Japanese flights were grounded due to snowy conditions in Japan’s western and northern regions, Japan’s biggest airlines stated.
ANA Holdings had halted 77 flight (0400 GMT) as of noon, affecting approximately 5,100 passengers according to Yutaka Kitahara (the company’s operations director).
Kitahara explained that the northeastern Japan weather is still unstable and could cause more cancellations.
Japan Airlines Co announced that 35 of its flights had been cancelled as of 10.10 GMT (0100 GMT), which affected 1,810 passengers. A representative at the airline’s operations department said.
The rapid spread of Omicron coronavirus has caused thousands of cancellations worldwide over Christmas weekend.
Japan increased border control to combat Omicron’s threat. According to health ministry, Japan only has about one dozen Omicron-related cases and 231 Omicron infections total, with overseas arrivals included.
