MILAN (Reuters – Workers at BNL in Italy, the Italian subsidiary of French banking group BNP Paribas (OTC) went on strike Monday to protest the cuts at the back office.

Italian bank unions stated that the strike had been a success, adding that there was solid take up. Official numbers were unavailable and no BNL representative was available for comment.

In a joint statement, Fabi and First-Cisl said that the bank’s interior offices had been completely abandoned and that they remained closed like most branches.

BNL workers are protesting the decision to hire external IT providers. This move, according to unions, will affect 90 of its total 11,500 employees. It also impacts around 700 branches in Italy.

BNL also sold an 80% share in Axepta Italy, its card payment processing company to Worldline. This was in addition to the grievances of unions.
