(Reuters) – Over six years, engine fires have plagued some Hyundai Motor Corp and Kia Motors Corp vehicles.
According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, it has opened an engineering analysis covering approximately 3 million vehicles in order to assess, among others, the effectiveness of the recalls that were initiated by two automakers. According to the agency, 161 possible engine-related fires were being investigated.
A next step is an engineering analysis. However, NHTSA sometimes closes these probes without any need for action.
In 2019, the agency opened an investigation into the Kia Optima, Sorento and 2011-2014 Kia Soul. It also investigated the Santa Fe and Hyundai Sonata 2011-2014 to look at non-crash fires.
Hyundai stated Monday that it will continue to cooperate fully with NHTSA regarding non-collision engine flames. Kia has not responded to requests for comment.
After regulators found that they had failed to recall engines from 1.6 million cars, the two South Korean firms agreed to pay a $210 million civil penalty.
