AMD, P&G join others in opting out of CES event on Omicron fears -Breaking

(Reuters) – Advanced Micro Devices (NASDAQ:), Micro-Star International Co and Procter & Gamble (NYSE:) Co are the latest companies to withdraw from attending the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in person next month as Omicron cases surge.
People and businesses in the United States have been forced to change their travel plans due to rapid spreading of the latest coronavirus type.
Airlines such as Delta Air Lines (NYSE 🙂 Alaska Air (NYSE:) Group has canceled hundreds upon hundreds of flights while a surge in infections threatens to derail any recovery in the cruise sector.
CES serves as an annual exhibition of the latest trends and gadgets within technology. There will be more than 2,200 exhibitors in Las Vegas this year.
According to a spokesperson from Consumer Technology Association (the event organizer), all participants will need to be covered up and vacinated.
According to a spokesperson from chip manufacturer AMD, “In-person engagements will be converted to virtual in the interest of safety, health, and well-being of our partners and employees.”
Several other companies, such as U.S. automaker General Motors Co. (NYSE:), Alphabet, Inc’s Google and Facebook (NASDAQ) parents Meta Platforms Inc., were also included. Twitter Inc (NYSE:), Lenovo Group (OTC:), AT&T Inc (NYSE:) and Amazon.com Inc (NASDAQ:) have dropped their in-person attendance plans, saying they would not send employees out of caution over the spread of Omicron.
A Reuters count shows that the number of US COVID-19 cases per capita has increased by 55%, to 205,000 per hour over the seven-day period.
