DUBAI (Reuters). – Russia and Iran were positive about the prospects of salvaging 2015 Iran nuclear agreement talks. On Tuesday, Tehran said an accord could be reached if all parties show “good faith”, while a Russian negotiator reported “indisputable progression”.

On Monday, Iran and the United States resumed indirect talks in Vienna. Tehran remained focused on the one-side of the original deal – lifting sanctions. This despite criticisms that it has made little progress in reining its nuclear activities.

Hossein Amirabdollahian from Iran, Foreign Minister, stated that the Vienna talks were moving in the right direction. He also said that it was possible to reach a satisfactory agreement for all sides if other participants continue their talks.

Amirabdollahian declared that “if they show seriousness in addition to good faith,” a deal could be reached soon or in the near-future if they so wish.”

Russian Envoy Mikhail Ulyanov stated on Twitter (NYSE 🙂 “We observe indisputable Progress… Sanctions Lifting is Being Actively Discussed in Informal Settings” during a meeting of the working group.

Following the addition of some Iranian demands to a work text, the seventh round concluded 11 days ago.

The West claimed that the negotiations had not made any progress since the start of the new round after Iran’s extremist president Ebrahim Raisi was elected in June. According to them, negotiators still had “weeks and not months” before the 2015 deal is finalized.

The deal which removed sanctions from Tehran in return for restrictions on Tehran’s nuclear activities, is little more than a relic. Donald Trump, then-President of USA pulled Washington out in 2018 and reinstated U.S. sanction. Iran breached many nuclear restrictions of that deal but continued pushing beyond those limits.

Iran is refusing to meet directly US officials. This means other parties to this deal, such as Russia, China France, Britain Germany, Germany, and the European Union, must travel between each side.

This format has been repeatedly criticised by the United States, who claim it slows down progress and Western officials continue to suspect that Iran is just playing for time.

Separately on Tuesday, Iranian media stated that Raisi had plans to visit Russia early in 2022 upon President Vladimir Putin’s invitation.
