Omicron appears to protect against delta and could displace it, study says

A new study suggests that people infected by the mutant omicron version of Covid-19 could have greater immunity to delta.
According to a small South African study, delta could be replaced by omicron, scientists have shown.
This could have major implications for the United States. Omicron infections are on the rise, however, the Delta variant which is still common, has seen an increase of hospitalizations.
The team of scientists led by Khadija Khan from the Africa Health Research Institute wrote that their results were consistent with Omicron replacing the Delta variant. “It can induce immunity which neutralizes Delta, making it less likely to re-infect with Delta again,” they stated in their conclusions.
According to scientists, if omicron replaces delta and is milder than previous variants, the incidence of Covid-19 severe diseases would decrease and the infection might shift to be less disruptive to society.
Omicrons were first recognized in South Africa and Botswana by Botswana’s November discovery.
Although the study was not peer reviewed, it is still being published. Because of the critical nature of this pandemic, scientists have made their findings public before other experts can evaluate them.
This study involved 13 participants, of which 11 had already been infected by the omicron virus. Seven of the participants were vaccinated, including three people who received two doses of the Pfizer and BioNTech vaccine and four who received the Johnson & Johnson vaccine.
After two weeks, participants in the study were infected with the omicron virus and their antibody response increased protection against it by more than fourfold. The ability to resist omicron reinfection was also increased by 14 fold in participants.
The scientists warned that increased immunity could be due to vaccinations, omicron inducible antibodies or previous infections. Immunized individuals showed greater protection.
The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention data showed that omicron accounted for 58% and Delta 41% respectively in sequenced Covid cases.
The delta variant caused an increase in hospitalizations across the United States. This straining of health-care systems throughout the country led to the rise in these numbers. According to the Health and Human Services Department’s seven-day average as of December 27, more than 75,000 people are being hospitalized in America with Covid. This is an increase of 3% over the previous week.
In the United States, the contagious variant of omicron is driving an increase in covid infections. The country reported an average of more than 237,000 daily new cases for the seven-day period ending Monday, up 66% over the past week, according to a CNBC analysis of data from Johns Hopkins University.
Research from South Africa suggests that people with the omicron virus are less likely to get mild illness than delta.

But, the agency said that results are preliminary and uncertain due to inability of measuring all infections as well as the lack of Omicron cases among the older, more vulnerable population.
