(Reuters) – The congressional committee that investigated the attack on the U.S. Capitol Jan. 6, 2017 urged the Supreme Court on Thursday to reject a request from former President Donald Trump for some White House records to be shielded.

The committee requested the court to remove a ruling from a lower court that allowed investigators access to telephone records and visitor logs for the final weeks of Trump’s presidency.

The briefing stated that “even though the facts are extraordinary, this case does not present a difficulty,” the lawyers representing the House of Representatives committee.

To understand Trump’s role in the outbreak of the riot, the committee requested the materials.

During the Trump-inspired assault, more than 100 officers sustained injuries. Four officers also lost their lives.

U.S. President Joe Biden determined previously that records that belonged to his executive branch should not be subjected to executive privilege. This protects confidential White House communication and is in the best interest of the country.

This month, the U.S. Court of Appeals of the District of Columbia Circuit ruled that Trump did not have any grounds to contest Biden’s decision for the documents to be turned over. This decision will be held until the Supreme Court makes a ruling.

Trump requested the Supreme Court block release of White House records on December 23rd. He argued that the request by the committee is too broad and an unprecedented intrusion upon executive privilege.

These documents can be found at the National Archives of the United States, which is the official U.S. body responsible for maintaining government records.

According to Thursday’s brief by the Select Committee, each day that passes without these documents is a handicap for a committee whose authorization ends on January 3, 2023.
