(Reuters) – Royal Caribbean (NYSE:) Group stated Thursday that it is experiencing a decline in bookings, and an increase in cancellations due to the Omicron variant of COVID-19 causing an increase in US COVID-19 cases.

However, the operator of cruises said that it was less severe than the disruption experienced by Delta-type wavers earlier this year.

Royal Caribbean’s U.S. operations were reopened in June. Since then, 1,745 passengers have tested positive for COVID-19, and 41 people are being admitted to hospital.

Calvin Johnson, Royal Caribbean’s chief physician, stated that although our case count has increased, the severity of these cases is much lower.

Although sailings are booked for the second quarter of 2022 within historic ranges, company officials stated that load factors in the first six months of 2022 were lower than historical levels.

Royal Caribbean said that it had experienced service disruptions in some destinations. To date, 16 of the 331 destination calls have been canceled or significantly modified by Royal Caribbean.

The company’s shares rose by nearly 2% during early morning trading.
