BEIJING, (Reuters) – China’s tech and industrial hub of Xian has reported more than 100 cases of COVID-19 on Thursday. This brings the total number of local-transmitted infections in this Chinese city to over 100.

Official data revealed that Xian recorded 155 additional local cases in December 29. The city, which has 13 million inhabitants, was forced to be under lockdown after it reported 155 new local cases for Dec. 29.

Despite the relatively low number of cases compared to clusters around other cities in the world, Xian officials have imposed severe restrictions on travel within the city and outside it since Dec. 23rd. Beijing insists that each outbreak is contained as quickly as possible.

Zhang Fenghu from the city government stated Wednesday that Xian reached a critical stage in fighting against the virus.

Micron Technology (NASDAQ) and Samsung Electronics (OTC), the two largest memory-chip manufacturers in the world, warned that the lockdown might affect the region’s chip production bases.

Xian also makes a great tourist destination. It is home to a collection of Terra-cotta Warriors, which were buried alongside China’s first emperor over 2,000 years ago.

To trace transmissions, authorities have launched multiple rounds of testing across cities. On Thursday, the sixth round started just one day following the conclusion of the fifth.

Many residents were prohibited from leaving their houses unless COVID-19 test results or other approved matters are received by authorities.

Many people are unable or unwilling to shop for their daily necessities due to the restrictions. They are dependent upon deliveries.

According to a Xian official, the restrictions have led to a shortage of staff at supply companies. The government is working towards resolving this issue.

WUHAN ANNIVERSARY

A Xian resident named He said that she attempted to place groceries orders on Freshippo’s online platform, but was unsuccessful in obtaining many of the items required for her order.

According to the screenshot He supplied, the app displayed a message underneath many items that said: “Delivery staffers not available”.

According to state media, several city areas have organized for delivery of groceries free of charge to residential properties.

According to a spokesperson from the Commerce Ministry, there is sufficient supply for all necessary items in Xian.

Now in its 8th day, the Xian lockdown coincides with second anniversary of coronavirus symptoms in Wuhan’s central city.

Wuhan health authorities stated that pneumonia sufferers were suffering from an unknown disease in a December 30, 2019 notification.

On Thursday, also thousands left messages on Li Wenliang’s social media account on Dec. 30, 2019, to mark the anniversary that Li Wenliang learned about the possible existence of a Wuhan-caused pneumonia-causing virus.

On Wednesday, China reported 101,890 coronavirus-related confirmed cases. This includes both imported and local ones. The death toll was 4,636.
