Eric Adams, New York City’s mayor is sworn in in Times Square shortly after Saturday’s ringing in of the New Year in America’s biggest city.

Adams (61) faces the enormous challenge of pulling city out from pandemic. Adams takes office while the city deals with records number of Covid-19 cases due to the micron variant.

Adams took his oath as an office officer, while confetti continued its drifting across Times Square. Associate Justice Sylvia O. Hinds Radix from the state Supreme Court’s appellate Division swore Adams into office as she placed one of her hands on a family bible and held his other a photograph of Dorothy who passed away in 2020.

After being sworn into office, he didn’t make any comments or take questions from reporters. He did however appear on Ryan Seacrest’s “Dick Clark’s New Years Rockin’ Eve” program shortly afterwards.

Seacrest heard from him that he was going to a few events but would not be able to make it all. He said he’d “be up in the morning and work for New York.”

To affirm the resilience of the city, he had previously appeared briefly on stage.

He said that even in Covid’s midst, in spite of all the difficulties we are going through, “this is a country in which hope and opportunity is always, always present.”

“It’s great that New York shows everyone how we come back,” said he. We showed the world what we are made of. We’re unbelievable. This city is amazing and we are ready to make a comeback, because it is New York.

Adams is an ex-New York City police officer captain, and Brooklyn borough President. Adams describes himself to be a pragmatic and progressive mayor who “gets stuff done.” Adams is the second Black mayor in New York City, following David Dinkins, who was mayor from 1993 to 1993. He also serves as the 110th Mayor of New York City.

Adams announced this week that Adams intends to maintain many of Bill de Blasio’s policies, which include vaccine mandates that are amongst the most strict in the United States.

All city employees must be vaccinated. New York City is also requiring private sector workers to be vaccinated. Adams claimed that this mandate was the broadest of all states and big cities.

Additionally, he is committed to keeping the schools open in the 8.8-million population of Houston.

Even without the need for a shutdown mandated by law, the city must deal with temporary closures due to Covid-19 infection.

Numerous subway lines were shut down because of the insufficient number of staff to operate regular trains due to positive transit worker test results.

The Rockettes Christmas show had to be cancelled, while the New York City Ballet pulled out of the last performances of “The Nutcracker.” Numerous Broadway shows were closed due to Covid-19 cases. Restaurants and bars in the area also temporarily shut down because employees tested positive.

Adams stated that he is currently working with a group of advisors to determine whether the city should expand its vaccine mandates. Adams also said they plan to provide rapid testing and face masks to New Yorkers and to introduce a color-coded alert system to warn them about the threat posed by the virus.

Adams, who is a mayoral candidate described his childhood in Brooklyn and Queens as poor. He also spoke out about issues related to crime and policing. Adams’ experiences include being a former captain of the police, an officer critical of his department, and a teenager who witnessed brutality from police officers.

Adams promises to be an action-oriented man in the office of the mayor, but Adams can sometimes act as an unorthodox politician and is expected to add his unique stamp to the position.

A vegan, he wrote in 2020 a book about his experience with diabetes. He has also shared his favourite smoothie recipe via social media. He has been known to visit some of the city’s nightclubs and said during an appearance on Stephen Colbert’s late-night program that “This city is full of nightlife.” The product must be tested. “I must be there.”
