REUTERS/Issei KatoTOKYO (Reuters – The Japan Atomic Energy Agency, (JAEA), and Mitsubishi Heavy Industries Ltd will collaborate with Bill Gates’ venture business to build a high tech nuclear reactor in Wyoming.
According to multiple sources, JAEA will sign an agreement with Mitsubishi Heavy Industries in January. This agreement will provide data and technical support from Japan’s advanced nuclear reactors.
TerraPower is a pioneering nuclear power venture that Gates founded. It will open its Natrium facility in Wyoming in 2028. US funding will cover 50% of this $4 billion project.
Terrapower initially considered the possibility of building an experimental nuclear plant in collaboration with China National Nuclear Corp. However, it had to find new partners when the Trump administration restricted the nuclear trade with China.
America has competed with Russia and China, who also want to export and build advanced reactors.
Japan has an unfortunate history of decommissioning the Monju advanced reactor prototype in 2016. This project cost $8.5billion, but produced little and caused years of controversy.
Monju was subject to accidents, regulatory violations, and cover-ups from its conception. The facility was shut down in 2011 after widespread distrust about nuclear energy.
JAEA, Mitsubishi Heavy Industries and JAEA could not be reached as they were both closed during the New Year holiday.
