Statue of Mexico president in opposition stronghold toppled after two days -Breaking

MEXICO CITY (Reuters] – The statue of Mexican President Andres Manual Lopez Obrador, which was erected in an area of opposition strength, lasted for just two days according to the state prosecutor. He said that photographs showing the vandalism had been shared online.

Roberto Tellez Monroy (outgoing Mayor) unveiled the statue at Atlacomulco municipality in central Mexico. It is where Lopez Obrador, Enrique Pena Nieto’s father, had lived.

Lopez Obrador, the head of the National Regeneration Movement party (MORENA), had governed this municipality up until just recently, when it was retaken by the Institutional Revolutionary Party or PRI.

The state prosecutor’s office spokesperson said that the statue had been demolished. It was an apparent act vandalism.

The prosecutor’s office must receive a complaint which he says has yet not been submitted in order to initiate an investigation.

Social media photos showed the headless sculpture lying flat on the ground.

According to the Mitofsky poll, Lopez Obrador is still popular in Mexico. His approval rating stands at 64.3%.

Atlacomulco’s city council didn’t immediately respond to inquiries about the incident.

Lopez Obrador said in the past that he was against the production of images of him.
