On Sunday morning, a fire broke out in the South African Parliament. There were flames coming from the roof, as well as a plume smoke visible for miles. Firefighters managed to contain the fire after several hours.
At mid-morning the smoke from one of several buildings making up Cape Town’s Parliament Complex was still visible.
The Old Wing has contained the fire. “Firefighters are trying to contain the flames in the New Wing where it has damaged the National Assembly Chamber,” the parliament stated in a statement.
Patricia De Lille (Public Works and Infrastructure Minister) told reporters that no injuries had been reported. It was unclear what caused the fire.
Jean-Pierre Smith of Cape Town’s mayoral committee was responsible for security and safety. Smith told reporters that firefighters had discovered cracks in the wall and that one section had suffered a collapsed roof.
He said that 60 firefighters, 12 firefighting vehicles, and various pieces of equipment were present on the scene to try and contain the flames.
Smoke billowed from both the National Assembly’s roof and the entrance, as water was pumped in by emergency service personnel.
It started at an office compound and quickly spread to a gymnasium just before 6:15 a.m.
