REUTERS/Dylan Martinez(Reuters) – Warner Music Group’s publishing arm has purchased the entire catalogue of British rock legend David Bowie, which spans six decades and includes hits like “Let’s Dance” and “Heroes.”
Bowie died at the age of 69. He was a pioneer in music, and his own mentality, to create some of the most original songs of our time.
Warner Music has agreed to release songs taken from 26 of his studio albums, plus the Posthumous Studio Album “Toy” as part of the Bowie estate’s deal.
Warner Music announced the agreement on Monday without disclosing the terms, though a source familiar with the matter estimated that it was about $250 million.
In September, Bowie’s estate signed an agreement that granted Warner Music worldwide rights to his catalog between 1968 and 2016.
Bowie shot to fame in Britain in 1969 with “Space Oddity,” whose words he said were inspired by watching Stanley Kubrick’s film “2001: A Space Odyssey” while stoned.
However, it was 1972’s portrayal of Ziggy Stardust as a doomed bisexual rock-envoy from outer space that made him a global celebrity.
His catalog deal marks the latest development in media rights, where companies are trying to raise royalties through the purchase of artist’s catalogs following the Pandemic that decimated physical income streams and deferred release of new recordings.
Warner Music is home to artists such as Cardi B and Ed Sheeran, while Madonna has partnered to relaunch her whole catalog in the coming years.
The deal it made with Bowie’s estate came days before Bowie’s 75th birthday on January 8.
