DAKAR (Reuters – Senegal’s President Macky Sall laid Monday the foundation for a $1.13B deep-water port that is being built by Dubai’s state-owned port operator DP World. The site will be located 50km (31 miles), south of Dakar.
Sall explained that DP World Dakar was a joint venture of Dubai’s logistics provider with the Port Authority of Dakar (PAD) and is the largest private investment made in West African countries.
Sall stated, “We’re ready to undergo the economic structural transformation with this mega-project.”
DP World stated that the initial phase would include 840m of quay, a 5km marine channel and a 366-metre vessel handling platform. The second phase will add 410m of container quay to accommodate 400-metre vessels.
Sultan Ahmed bin Sulayem, chairman of DP World, stated that his company will develop and manage the container terminal covering 300 hectares. It also plans to finance the construction and maintenance of the maritime infrastructure.
Sulayem stated, “It is a brighter tomorrow as this new port brings greater economic growth and prosperity, jobs, and job opportunities.”
