REUTERS/Evelyn HocksteinWASHINGTON, (Reuters) –Senate Majority leader Chuck Schumer stated Monday that the Senate would vote to change the rules of the governing body on or before January 17, Martin Luther King Jr. Holiday. If Republicans keep blocking voting rights legislation,
This change may allow Democrats to pass legislation in the Senate with a simple majority. They currently hold 50 of the 100 seats, with Kamala Harris as the Democratic Vice President. She can also serve as tiebreaker vote.
Current legislation is being blocked by filibuster, which calls for 60 votes to close a debate and allow the bill to move on to the next stage.
Schumer stated Monday in a letter addressed to Democratic senators that the change of rule would “protect our democracy’s foundation: fair and free elections”.
