NEW DELHI (Reuters), Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kajriwal stated on Tuesday that he tested positive for COVID-19. He made this statement after he spoke at an election rally, where no one was allowed to wear a mask despite increasing infections in the country.

Kejriwal was the highest ranking elected official from Delhi. He was among the 37,379 COVID-19 new cases in India within the last 24 hours. Although the Omicron coronavirus variant is beginning to take over Delta, the daily case load has been at its highest level since September. However, hospitalisations are not expected to spike.

Kejriwal addressed the crowd in Uttarakhand’s poll-bound state. He posted on Twitter (NYSE:) that he was suffering from mild symptoms at home and asked those who had contacted him recently to follow his lead and get tested for COVID-19.

Delta was helped by Mega-rallies that took place in early 2013 and caused havoc throughout the country. Many states are set to go back to election in just a few short months. Experts and the public worry about the health of the candidates. Local media reports that the nation’s largest court, Uttar Pradesh in northern India, has asked for delay to the election.

“Try spending some time in isolation to watch your own videos/advertisements on how to be careful, wear masks, and not overcrowd public places,” Facebook (NASDAQ:) user Abhishekh Singh wrote on Kejriwal’s official page.

Over 6,000 positive tests were found in Delhi on Monday night. The Federal government has instructed local authorities that they can impose movement restrictions as needed when the rate exceeds 5%.

India has seen a nearly threefold increase in its overall positive case rates since November, to 3.24 percent on Tuesday. Some cities even have their schools and colleges closed.

According to the federal home ministry, 1,892 Omicron cases have been confirmed in the country so far. The largest number was found in Maharashtra (Mumbai’s state), followed by Delhi.

To reach 482,017, the country saw an increase in death rates of 124. The total number of infections is 34.96 millions.
