(Reuters] – On Tuesday, the Washington Football Team of National Football League said that their new name will be revealed on February 2, after a thorough review. The original name was widely regarded as a racial slur directed at Native Americans.

Although the Redskins had always maintained their commitment to keeping the name the same, they changed their mind in 2020 after Landover’s naming rights sponsor urged them to rebrand.

While the logo and name were being finalized, Washington Football Team was their team’s official name.

Jason Wright, the team’s president stated that they can’t wait for their team to start running on clear paths with their team name and identification.

We’ve known for a long time that it was nearly impossible to choose a name all our fans could identify with. However, we are excited about the final choice, which reflects our rich heritage, represents our region, and is informed and inspired by our fans.

RedWolves, Wolves and Redwolves were popular choices among fans throughout the rebranding.

Wright explained that “Once our investigation into Wolves began, we realized a major challenge: other trademarks would restrict our ability make the name ours,” Wright added.

In 1932, the Boston Braves founded the team that would become the Washington Redskins. The Redskins were named after it, and the team moved to Washington in 1937. Numerous American professional and college sports teams use Native American themes as their nicknames.

The team have won three Super Bowls and are one of the NFL’s marquee franchises, ranked by Forbes last August as the league’s fifth most valuable franchise at $4.2 billion.
