Tesla opens dealership in Xinjiang, China

Tesla has opened a new sales and service center in the Xinjiang region of China, home to a Muslim population known as the Uyghurs whom the United Nations and rights organizations have identified as a repressed ethnic group.

The 2021 Census will show that the United States, United Kingdom and Canada said China engages in “forced labour, mass detention in internment camps, forced sterilisations” and other abuses against Uyghurs. Separately, EU imposed sanctions on China for “arbitrary detentions” of Uyghurs.

China has denied those allegations repeatedly “lies and disinformation.”

Tesla posted the news on Weibo (a popular social media platform) last week. The Wall Street Journal previously reportedTesla’s entry into Xinjiang.

A Dec. 31 post on Tesla’s Weibo account which was translated by CNBC said: “The Urumqi Tesla Center officially opens #inanewdirection… As the first Tesla Center in Xinjiang, this location integrates sales, service and delivery. It will help Xinjiang users enjoy the experience of one-stop service, escorting Tesla car owners on their journey to the west.”

Another Weibo post on that same date said: “#inanewdirection Urumqi Tesla Center has officially opened! The last day in 2021, we will meet again in Xinjiang. Let’s make 2022 the year that Xinjiang becomes pure electric. [vehicles]! Encounter even more beauty!”

Chinese wordplay was represented by the hashtag phrases. The region’s first name, Xinjiang contains the “new” character.

China’s social media users showed appreciation for Tesla’s posts. However, the West was furious at the decision.

As NBC News previously reported in June 2021, Amnesty International researchers found that “Chinese authorities in the western region of Xinjiang have been rounding up women and men — largely Muslims from the Uighur, Kazakh and Kyrgyz ethnic minorities — and detaining them in camps designed to rid them of terrorist or extremist leanings since 2017.

Human rights organizations and accounts from the ground say that more than 1 million Uighurs, as well as other minority groups from Xinjiang, are held in interment camps. These people are made to work in factories, study Marxism and renounce their religion. Beijing asserts that these camps provide vocational training, and they are essential to combat extremism.

Reacting to this, U.S. Senators approved recently a bill banning imports from China’s Xinjiang region unless businesses can prove they were produced without forced labor.

U.S. is the bill’s creator. Senator Marco Rubio (R.Fla.), stated that Tesla was the author of the bill. He said in a press release, “Nationless Corporations are helping China Communist Party cover-up genocide or slave labor in this region.”

China’s scrutiny of Elon Musk’s SpaceX, an electric vehicle company, and SpaceX, a reusable rocket company have led to both being shut down.

China, for example, sent last year’s complaint to United Nations stating that SpaceX satellites nearly collided in China’s orbit station twice in 2021.

Nearly 30,000 satellites and debris are thought to be orbiting Earth. Scientists have asked governments for data sharing to lower the likelihood of disaster collisions. SpaceX already has nearly 1,900 satellites deployed to support its Starlink broadband network. It plans on launching thousands more.

Tesla helped Beijing show that the country is open to foreign investment and that foreign companies can succeed in an extremely closed market.

Musk said in 2019 that he had broken ground on Tesla’s Shanghai factory. He stated, “Anyone who joins today, as a Junior Engineer in Tesla China, could one day become Tesla CEO worldwide… They could have my job some day.”
