French court backs class action against Sanofi over Depakine drug

The epilepsy drug caused learning and birth defects when it was administered to pregnant women. Sanofi France Info radio reported France Info (NASDAQ:), citing news agency AFP.
Victims’ association APESAC (which represents 7,500 families) launched the class-action in September 2021 against Sanofi. It was put under formal investigation for manslaughter in relation to Depakine in 2020.
Sanofi at the time denied the allegations and stated that it would contest the validity of the investigation.
Tribunal Judiciaire de Paris did not respond immediately to our requests.
Sanofi did not respond to our request for comment. At 1035 GMT, its shares rose 0.6% to 88.67, which was 0.5% higher than the benchmark in France.
According to French authorities, Depakine is responsible for neurodevelopmental and deformities in as many as 30,400 children.
