WASHINGTON (Reuters] – One year after the deadly attack on the U.S. Capitol by Donald Trump’s supporters, visible signs of increased security can be seen everywhere. These include police riot shields at the doorways and metal detectors in the House of Representatives chamber.

After the July riot, miles of steel fencing surrounded the Capitol Complex. The National Troops of Armed National Troops that were deployed in the immediate aftermath of Jan. 6, 2021’s attack are long gone.

U.S. Capitol Police officers are now more numerous and better equipped than ever before. The department also has additional defensive equipment. Some areas still have lighter fencing.

Capitol halls are empty now, after once being crowded with 2.5 million people per year. Nearly everyone entering the Capitol complex must either be a member or have a staff ID. This restriction was prompted by COVID-19.

In July, Congress approved a bill worth $2.1 billion that included $100 million to fund the Capitol Police and $300 million for security improvements. More than $1 billion was allocated for the Pentagon. Of this, $500 million will be used for National Guard funds, which were depleted by the security increase following the riot.

The United States Capitol Police is now stronger than ever and more prepared to fulfill its mission,” stated Thomas Manger (Capitol Police Chief), who was hired after the attack to restructure the department. “The Department began substantial work right away after the attack to address the failures that were made, such as intelligence, operational planning, and leadership.

Around 140 police officers suffered injuries as Trump’s supporters stormed a building trying to block Congress from officially recognising the 2020 election loss of President Joe Biden. Police were beaten up by rioters for several hours and smashed windows, sending staff and lawmakers fleeing for their lives.

One of four Capitol guards who died in the aftermath of the attacks, and one who fought rioters was killed that day. One of the rioters who tried to enter the building via a broken window was also killed by police.

Both parties had lawmakers join in the call for greater security following the attack. However, the response to the various measures taken was partisan. House Republicans were particularly critical of five metal detectors placed at the House chamber’s doors. On the day that the riot broke out, police had barricaded the doorways and legislators fled for safety.

House Republicans who are staunch supporters of gun rights have dismissed metal detectors as political stunts. Louie Gohmert and Andrew Clyde filed a lawsuit to remove them.

The anniversary day of the attack will see increased security.

Both the Senate and the House are organizing events for the anniversary. Biden will give a speech in the Capitol. On Thursday, the Senate will be in session. The House isn’t.
