(Reuters] – Volvo Cars, self-driving sensor company Luminar Technologies Inc and Volvo Cars announced Wednesday that a “Ride Pilot” hands-free driving system will debut in California for the first time. The companies have not yet given a release date.

Volvo will deploy this technology in an all-electric SUV, that Volvo intends to unveil later in the year.

Volvo intends to make self-driving available as a subscription option to existing customers once the vehicles are on the roads. Ride Pilot has yet to be made available by Volvo.

Ride Pilot has now stated it will not turn on Ride Pilot for customers until Ride Pilot has passed a rigorous verification and testing protocol that includes validation of Ride Pilot’s safety for highway use in many conditions.

They stated that they plan to test Ride Pilot in California this year, subject to regulatory approvals.

Luminar’s lidar sensor will enable the vehicle to gain a 3D map of its surroundings. Zensact’s software will connect the five radar sensors to eight cameras and 16 ultrasonic sensor arrays.
