(Reuters] – These are the reactions from the 1st anniversary of Jan. 6, 2021’s attack on U.S. Capitol. It was a failed attempt by a mob led by supporters of Republican former-President Donald Trump to stop certification of Democrat Joe Biden winning the presidency.

U.S.PRESIDENT JOE BIDDEN

We must know the truth and be able to tell lies. The truth is that a former President of the United States of America spread lies about the 2020 elections. This is because he prefers power to principle. …

Democracy was attacked one year ago in this holy place. Simply and simply attacked. Under attack was the will to govern. Our Constitution faced the most grave threats. …

“The ex-president and his allies have determined that suppressing your votes and subverting our elections is the best way to win. …

He’s not an ex-president; he is a failed former president.”

A DEMOCRAT, CHUCK SCHUMER, SENATE MAJORITY ALEADER

I’m pleading for Republican voters and all Americans to reject the Big Lie. We don’t need your ideology to match ours. Although we may disagree with each other, we are not allowed to believe a huge lie.

U.S. SENSATE REPUBLICAN LEADER, MITCH McCONNELL

January 6, 2021 was a difficult day for Congress, and the country. Criminals stormed the United States Capitol which is the home of the federal first branch. They brutalized officers and tried to stop Congress doing its work. …

It has been amazing, as I mentioned yesterday to be able to see Washington Democrats trying to leverage this anniversary for partisan policies that predate the event. Particularly jaw-dropping is the way that some Senate Democrats use the mob’s attempts to destroy our country’s rules and norms to justify their decision to abandon our rules and norms.

REPUBLICAN U.S. REPRESENTATIVE, LIZ CHENEY VICE CHAIR of THE HOUSE JAN.6 COMMITTEE

“Our institutions held up, but that was only because people stood up to the Trump administration’s pressure.

“The threat does not end. Trump used to continue making similar claims about Jan. violence that he knew. 6.”

REPUBLICAN U.S. Representative ADAM KINZINGER HOUSE JAN.6 COMMITTEE MEMBE

“I am really disappointed today. “I’m sorry… mostly because there hasn’t been progress… As Americans, especially as Republicans, we are almost in an even worse place than the day following Jan. 6.”

REPUBLICAN U.S. REPUBLICAN U.S.

At our own risk, we ignore Jan. 6’s lessons. The fragility of democracy is due to leaders who are honest and able, with a greater concern for the health of the Republic than winning the next election.

DEMOCRATIC FORMERPRESIDENT BARACK BOMBAMA

A violent attack at the Capitol one year ago made clear how fragile our democracy’s experiment is. Although the broken windows and rioters were brought to justice, our democracy is now at much greater risk.

“Although initially rejected by many Republicans, the claims that fanned the flames of violence on January 6th have since been embraced by a sizeable portion of voters and elected officials – many of whom know better. …

“Historically, Americans have been defenders of democracy and freedom around the world – especially when it’s under attack. But we can’t serve that role when leading figures in one of our two major political parties are actively undermining democracy at home. We can’t set an example when our own leaders are willing to fabricate lies and cast doubt on the results of free and fair elections.”
