Austria shortens coronavirus quarantine, presses ahead with mandatory jabs -Breaking

BERLIN (Reuters). Austria will impose COVID-19 new measures starting Saturday. The government continues to work on a draft law that would make mandatory vaccinations beginning February 1, as Omicron spreads. This was announced by Chancellor Karl Nehammer on Thursday.

Austria was able to reduce daily COVID-19 incidences with the fourth coronavirus lockdown it had between November and December 2013. Omicron however is increasing these numbers.

Nehammer said that the federal government must do “everything we can” to avoid another lockdown at a press conference, after meeting with representatives from provincial governments and members of pandemic task forces.

Officials stated that new measures will include reducing the time it takes to get vaccinated, making people wear masks outside when there are large groups, and restricting vaccine certificates’ validity to six months.

To ensure that only fully vaccinated people have access to shops, and those with COVID-19 recovery will be inspected more often, the government is increasing inspections.

Nehammer stated, “If companies don’t comply, they will be able to close them down.”

Nehammer, when asked about his draft law for compulsory vaccinations that the government had approved in December but has yet to pass, said that he considered it a key part of COVID-19.

His statement stated that although the regulator was working to find a solution conforming to the Constitution, compulsory vaccines were essential for us.

The Health Minister Wolfgang Mueckstein stated that people who had booster jabs and negative PCR tests will no longer be in quarantine. Others can still finish their quarantine as long as they do not have negative PCR after five days.

The evidence that this new variant of COVID-19 causes a significantly lower number of severe COVID-19-related hospitalizations has led to a variety other countries reconsidering quarantine times to prevent their economies from paralyzing.

Austria recorded 8,263 additional COVID-19 infections on Thursday. That’s almost three times more than the weekly average.
