ALMATY, Reuters – Troops and protesters clashed on Thursday in Kazakhstan’s largest capital Almaty. On Thursday police said that tens of rioters were being “eliminated” after they attempted to storm their offices.

Reuters correspondents from the scene reported that several armoured personnel vehicles and dozens more troops marched into the Almaty main square on Thursday morning. Hundreds of protestors were demonstrating against the government’s decision for the third consecutive day.

According to Reuters witnesses gunshots could be heard from troops approaching the crowd. But, since then, things have calmed down.

Ten policemen and guards officers were killed in protests around Kazakhstan on Tuesday and Wednesday after protests erupted due to a rise in fuel prices. On Tuesday and Wednesday, the Kazakh President called for Russia to help him and promised to send peacekeepers.

The National Bank of Kazakhstan announced on Thursday, that it had suspended the work of all banks within the country to ensure the safety of its workers. Internet access is somewhat down in Kazakhstan.
