Researchers have found that the U.S., along with a number of countries across Europe and Asia, is one of the nations likely to fail the WHO’s Covid vaccine target for 2022.

WHO established an October target that countries should vaccinate 70% in their population by 2022.

Our World in Data projections, which were last updated Tuesday, show that more than 100 countries have not yet reached this goal.

Our World in Data’s projections were compiled using official data, with the current vaccination rate for each country calculated as the average number of people who received their second vaccine dose within the past 14 days. The WHO goal of mid-2022 was assumed by researchers to ensure that these rates will remain stable.

Researchers stated that by adding the expected share to those who have been fully vaccinated already, they project the percentage of people who will get fully vaccinated on July 1, 2022. We exclude countries which haven’t reported data for over 30 days from our projections.”

Their method didn’t account for factors like vaccine shortages, speed of vaccination rollsout, or government policy changes.

Estonia, Jamaica, Nigeria and others were among the nations that did not expect to immunize 70% of their citizens by the end of 2012.

Only 50 countries, which includes Japan, Portugal, Qatar and Portugal, have reached 70%.

Saudi Arabia, Russia, and Hong Kong weren’t yet above the 70% mark but are on track for reaching the WHO goal by mid-2022.
