WASHINGTON (Reuters) – The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) said on Thursday that precautions adopted by AT&T (NYSE:) and Verizon (NYSE:) in order to deploy new 5G service offer fewer protections for airline flights than those used in France.

This week, the two wireless carriers agreed to follow similar measures to France’s and delay using C-Band spectrum to wireless service for a period of time until January 19. FAA stated that there were “big differences” in the safety measures in France and in the United States. They also said that the 5G buffer zones at French airports cover “96 second flight time” while the U.S. precautions only protect “the last 20 seconds.”
