The alleged violation of cybersecurity laws was reported by local media. It is now the latest controversy for Walmart (NYSE.) which already faces accusations for allegedly stopping the sale of products from Xinjiang.
The Shenzhen police discovered 19 vulnerabilities in Walmart’s network systems in November. They accused the company of slowing down to correct them, China Quality News reported Wednesday.
Walmart was told to rectify the problem, but the report did not mention any penalties or specific details about the vulnerability.
Both the Shenzhen Police and retail giant were not available for comment Friday.
Walmart has now faced fresh criticism in China over its decision to remove products sourced in Xinjiang (from its stores and apps) in recent months.
Xinjiang, which is a rising point in conflict between China’s Western governments, has been estimated by U.N. rights group experts to be more than a half million Uyghurs as well as members of other Muslim minority groups, who have been held there.
China denies any allegations of forced labor or other abuses in its far west region.
Walmart saw a surge in membership cancellations at Sam’s Club China, its Chinese arm since the Xinjiang issues. China’s anti-graft office also charged Sam’s Club with “stupidity, shortsightedness”
Walmart has yet to comment, however Reuters reported that a Sam’s Club executive stated that this was a “misunderstanding”, and that there had been no intentional removal of Xinjiang-sourced goods.
According to separate media reports, Sam’s Club in Shanghai was penalized 10,000 Yuan ($1,568) for violations of food safety laws. They found out that the frozen product had no expiry or production date.
