Bitcoin Mining Could Be Endangered by Political Turmoil in Kazakhstan
  • Central Asian nations are one of the largest in global mining.
  • Due to the environment of violence and suspension of internet services, mining activity has been adversely affected.
  • The unrest in the streets could continue for weeks, after the president of Kazakhstan ordered “shoot to kill” against protesters.

Already, dozens have been killed and many more injured in violent protests against rising fuel prices in the Central Asian country. Due to the political chaos, Bitcoin mining is suffering in Kazakhstan.

Kazakhstan was one of eight countries where the largest number of bitcoins has been mined in 2021. According to the data of the Cambridge Center for Finance Alternatives for August 2018, Kazakhstan is currently second in the world with an average hash rate of 18.1%.

Due to disruptions in telephone and internet service, the ex-Soviet republic is in turmoil. These have had an adverse impact on BTC miners’ daily activities.

A country with an estimated 18.75million inhabitants, it absorbed most of the China-sourced mining. The communist government made Bitcoin mining illegal, and began a fierce persecution of miners in the southern part of the country for ecological reasons.

Escalation violence

However, Kazakhstan’s mining industry is now in jeopardy. Kazakhstan has all the infrastructure required to mine BTC, and it offers the legal framework for mining. But, there is a danger that violence will lead to miners moving away from more peaceful areas.

The violence has escalated after the president of Kazakhstan, Kasim-Yomart Tokáyev, ordered the police and the army to “shoot to kill” against the protesters, whom he has described as “bandits”.

“I gave the order to the organs of the police and the army to shoot to kill without warning,” said the president. At the same time, he affirmed that he will not dialogue “with armed and prepared bandits, both local and foreign.”

The exact date and impact of the internet service restoration on mining activities is unknown. The country had been without internet connectivity for 36 hours as of Friday morning according to Internet monitor Netblocks.

The drop in hashrate caused by the suspension of the Internet was 12%, reported The Block’s vice president of research, Larry Cermak, through his Twitter (NYSE:) account.

Flipside

  • The price of Bitcoin fell by $ 42,470 Friday morning ET due to investor nervousness.
  • The violence in Kazakhstan coupled with the Federal Reserve’s announcement to remove economic stimulus earlier than expected, is putting pressure on the price of BTC, which is at its lowest level since September.

Why you should care

  • Protests broke out in response to the rise in fuel prices. Even though the protests were already growing in anger due to the social inequality and economic crisis that has been compounded by the coronavirus epidemic,

The miners might look to move operations overseas if violence is not stopped. BTC mining is also causing severe blackouts.
