On Saturday, a huge slab of rock fell off a cliff onto pleasure boaters who were near a waterfall in a Brazilian lake. Officials stated that at most five people had died.
Edgard Estevo, Minas Gerais Fire Department Commander, stated at a press conference that 20 persons may still be missing and added that they are looking for them.
Although 32 were reported to have been injured by the accident, most of them had been discharged from hospital by Saturday night.
The video images show a group of boats slowing down near Furnas Lake’s rock cliff. When a fissure formed in the rock, a massive piece of rock fell directly on at least two vessels.
Estevo stated that the accident happened between Capitolio and Sao Jose da Barra, where the boats were leaving.
The Minas Gerais press office informed The Associated Press, that divers and helicopters had been dispatched by the fire department to assist. Romeu Zema from Minas Gerais sent social media messages in solidarity with victims.
Furnas Lake is also known as the “sea Of Minas” and it’s a tourist attraction in an area about 420 km (260 miles) north Sao Paulo.
According to Civil Defense of Minas Gerais, heavy rains have caused flooding in the state. This has forced nearly 17,000 people from their homes.
Officials believe that earlier rains may have caused the collapse of the wall.
Brazilian Navy also assisted in rescue efforts. It said that it will investigate the cause of the incident.
