One coronavirus strain discovered by a researcher from Cyprus combines both the delta and the omicron versions. Bloomberg News reported on Saturday.

Bloomberg claimed that Leondios Kostrikis, professor of biological sciences, at the University of Cyprus, called this strain “deltacron”, due to its omicronlike genetic signatures in the delta genomes.

According to the report, Kostrikis has found 25 cases so far. Although it is not yet clear if there may be more cases or if the virus could cause other problems, it’s possible to speculate.

“We will see in the future if this strain is more pathological or more contagious or if it will prevail” against the two dominant strains, delta and omicron, Kostrikis said in an interview with Sigma TV Friday. He also said that he believes that omicron would eventually overtake deltacron.

Bloomberg reports that the researchers have sent GISAID their findings this week. This international database tracks viruses.

As omicron spreads rapidly around the world, this variant of deltacron is now available. This has caused a spike in Covid-19 cases. According to Friday’s CNBC analysis of Johns Hopkins University data, the U.S. reports an average daily number of 600,000 cases per day. This is a 72% increase over the week before and an unprecedented pandemic record.
