REUTERS/Mohamed Nureldin AbdallahKHARTOUM, Reuters – On Saturday, the United Nations announced that it will invite Sudanese political parties and military leaders to participate in a “political proces” that aims at ending a crisis that was triggered by a October coup.
U.N. mediation succeeded in restoring Prime Minister Abdalla Hamdok in weeks following the coup, but his resignation last Wednesday has deepened the uncertainty surrounding Sudan’s future political and electoral prospects.
A campaign of ongoing protests has been carried out by pro-democray and neighbourhood-based resistance organizations, parties and political parties. Security forces crackdowns have resulted in at least 60 deaths.
Analysts and diplomats agree that more instability is possible within Sudanese borders and beyond if there’s no new direction towards transition and credible elections.
U.N. Special Representative Volker Perthes stated that “all measures have failed to restore the course of transformation” in a statement which announced the U.N.-facilitated launch.
“The… continued violence against mostly peaceful protesters has only served the to deepen mistrust among all parties in Sudan,” he said.
The U.N. stated that Sudan’s military, arm movements, political parties and civil society will be invited to take part.
