(Reuters). Nineteen deaths, including nine children were reported by city officials. Several other victims were also injured in an apartment building fire, which occurred on Sunday in The Bronx borough.

Eric Adams, New York City’s Mayor confirmed the death toll from the fire that broke out on a 19th-floor apartment building at 11:11 a.m.

Officials stated earlier on Sunday that 32 individuals were admitted to hospital with serious injuries, and 60 others had sustained minor injuries.

Adams stated in an interview for CNN that “Right now, we have 19 confirmed dead” and added that there are many more in critical condition.

According to the New York Times, nine of those who died were children.

Around 200 firefighters were involved in putting out the fire. The cause of the fire was still not known by Daniel Nigro, city’s chief of fire services. He spoke to reporters during a news conference on Sunday.

“Members discovered victims on every floor, in stairwells. They were taking them out of cardiac and respiration arrest,” he stated.

Nigro stated that smoke from the fire had reached every floor, probably because it was not closed at the entrance to the first apartment. Also, victims were suffering significant smoke inhalation.
