BRASILIA, Reuters – At least 7 people were killed and 9 seriously hurt when a rock wall collapsed onto motorboats below a waterfall in southeastern Brazil. The incident occurred on Saturday.

A mountain of boulders suddenly detonated from the canyon wall, and crashed onto several leisure boats. This created a massive wave that swept across the Lake Capitolio in Minas Gerais.

Two boats were smashed by the columns of rock as tourists shouted at each other in videos posted to social media.

After others were lost or feared to have been lost, authorities said that three persons were still missing. Divers searched for the missing persons in the lake.

One of the victims had suffered broken bones, and another was admitted to hospital for serious head and facial injuries. He said that 23 other people were also treated for minor injuries.

Two weeks of heavy rains have been falling on the region, potentially causing rock to shift. The dike that runs through the Iron Ore Mine 300km to the East overflowed on Saturday and cut off major Federal Highways.
