BEIJING, (Reuters) – China’s industry ministry Monday presented guidelines it claimed could help its consumer goods companies be more creative with their products. These included smart rice cookers or robot vacuum cleaners.

Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT) stated that the guidelines are aimed at “light industry”, which is defined as businesses making consumer goods and instruments. It said there was a shortage of products of medium-to-high quality and an absence of well-known global brands.

It is encouraging producers to make products such as computer-enabled rice cookers and shoes that have location functions.

It stated, in addition to announcing that China hoped for an increase in brand recognition and a better position in the manufacturing value chains of the world by 2025.

The report provided specific recommendations for each product type. The report stated, “Diversified and trendy liquor products that are low in alcohol should be created to appeal to younger and international consumers.”

This document can be viewed by the public until January 20th.
