China’s JD.com opens first ‘robotic shops’ in Europe

JD.com opened Ochama physical shops in the Netherlands. Chinese online retailer JD.com claims the stores will operate cashless and have robots to sort and select items.

Chinese E-Commerce giant JD.comIt has two new retail shops in the Netherlands, which it claims will feature robots that prepare and deliver packages.

Ochama’s “robotic shop” is located in Leiden and Rotterdam. It marks JD.com's first venture into Europe using bricks and mortar. This demonstrates the ambitions of Chinese giant to grow beyond China.

JD.com stated that customers can order items from beauty to food and furniture using the Ochama app. The app allows them to order products from food, beauty and home furnishings and then they can go into the shop where robotic arms and automated vehicles will sort and pick up their orders. A shopper can then scan the barcode of their smartphone to get their orders transported to their location via a conveyor belt.

Chinese ecommerce giant said that it intends to open 2 more stores in Amsterdam and Utrecht, the Netherlands.

Ochama stores combine JD.com’s emphasis on logistics with e-commerce. China is the home of Ochama. operates its own logistics armIt plans to grow internationally. JD.com is also the operator of a large e-commerce company in China’s second largest economy.

JD.com continues to make most of its revenues from China, but it has expanded its international presence in recent years. Joybuy.com, an online store that sells international products and services, is operated by the company. The company has an ecommerce joint venture in Thailand, and is also the largest shareholder of Tiki Vietnamese shopping platform.
