Democrats urge Biden to grant deportation relief to at least 2 million immigrants -Breaking

WASHINGTON, (Reuters) – The U.S. Senate Democrats have urged the Biden Administration to permit at least 2,000,000 illegal immigrants to remain in the United States to extend their stay and prevent them from being deported to countries that are prone to natural disasters or crises.
They ask President Joe Biden (a fellow Democrat) to issue Temporary Protected Status to Central American migrants from Guatemala, and to expand eligibility for people from El Salvador, Honduras, and Nicaragua.
More than 30 Democrats, including Senator Robert Menendez, wrote to the top officials of government to urge them to take action after Biden failed to get immigration reform passed last year during his first year as president.

TPS permits people who are already living in the United States when they were designated to work and stay legally, even if their homelands have suffered from natural disasters or armed conflict.
Designations, issued by the secretary for homeland security, can be renewed at any time.
In a letter that was seen by Reuters, lawmakers stated: “We believe the serious damage done by hurricanes just one year apart, in combination with severe drought conditions, as well as the socio-economic crises exacerbated b the COVID-19 pandemic warrant such an administration action.”
TPS has been granted to over 300,000 migrants from El Salvador, Honduras, and Nicaragua.
The proposal would allow at least two million additional immigrants to the region to be eligible for deportation relief. This is according the estimate of the Migration Policy Institute in Washington, which was made early last year.
It did not take into account the large number of crossings at the border in 2021. The Menendez letter also did not mention how many individuals could qualify.
Critics claim that the temporary protections promote more illegal entry.
