From ambulance delays to transit disruptions, COVID-19 absences hit Canada’s public services -Breaking

(Reuters). Whether it’s delayed ambulance service or police shortages in Canada, Canadian public agencies that have been hard hit by the absence of COVID-19 workers have reduced their services, rearranged their staff, and warned the public about possible disruptions in emergency response plans.

Paramedics from Canada’s biggest city Toronto reported that there was no emergency response vehicle available for paramedics over the weekend. As of Monday, 12.8% of the “essential” and “critical services” employees were absent due to COVID-19.

Brad Ross, a spokesperson for the city said that it is common for ambulances be held up in any given moment. It was getting more frequent, however, as COVID-19 has made it difficult for workers to get off the job and hospitals have stretched their resources making it harder to discharge ambulances.

He stated that some low priority calls can be put off, while others will go to fire departments.

Canada, like much of the rest is being affected by Omicron variants. Canada set a new record earlier this month for having more than 4100 COVID-19-infected patients in one day.

Metrolinx in Ontario was forced to reduce its transit service due to COVID-19. This is according Anne Marie Aikins, spokesperson.

COVID-19 left about 9% Winnipeg Police Service personnel on unpaid leave. However, the service reported that they had transferred officers from special units to patrol street corners and gang enforcement.

Halifax, Atlantic City cancelled ferry and bus travels due to COVID-19 absentees.
