Albert Bourla, Pfizer’s CEO, said that a vaccine targeting the omicron version of Covid would be available by March. The company had already begun producing the doses.

Bourla stated that the vaccine would be available in March to CNBC’s Squawk Box. “We have begun to manufacture some of these at-risk quantities.”

Bourla indicated that the vaccine will target other variants as well. It is not known if or not an Omicron vaccine would be needed, or how they would be used. However, Pfizer will keep some dosages on hand because many governments are keen to have it available as soon as possible.

“The hope is that we will achieve something that will have way, way better protection particularly against infections, because the protection against the hospitalizations and the severe disease — it is reasonable right now, with the current vaccines as long as you are having let’s say the third dose,” Bourla said.

According to the U.K. Health Security Agency, real-world data has proven that Moderna and Pfizer’s vaccines only 10% are effective in preventing symptoms from omicron up to 20 weeks following the second dose. Study found that two of the first doses provided good protection against serious illness.
