(Reuters] – The latest COVID-19 hospitalizations were recorded in the United States at 132.646, according a Reuters tally. It surpasses January’s record of 132.051, which was hit in January 2013 due to an increase in Omicron infections.

Since December, hospitalizations have been steadily increasing, more than doubling over the past three weeks as Omicron rapidly overtook Delta in the United States as the predominant version of the virus.

The Reuters analysis shows that Delaware, Illinois (Maine), Maryland, Missouri and Ohio have all reported records for COVID-19 patient hospitalizations recently.

Although the Omicron variant is less serious than the other, officials warn that it could cause severe infections. Some hospitals have had to suspend elective procedures due to the inability of their staff to deal with the influx of patients.
