LOS ANGELES, (Reuters) – Actress Betty White, 99, died on New Years Eve from a stroke that she suffered almost a week before, according to a Monday copy of her death certificate, posted by TMZ.com.

White died from a partially redacted cause of death. This is a term that refers to strokes or loss of blood circulation in the brain due to a ruptured or clot.

According to the Los Angeles County Department of Public Health document, White suffered a stroke six days prior. The health agency and the county Registrar-Recorder/County Clerk’s office, where vital records are kept, both declined to comment.

White’s agent Jeff Witjas stated in a statement that Betty died peacefully and without pain in her bed. As her close friend, this is my most precious thing. Betty will not discuss anything else.

TMZ quoted unnamed sources saying that White was alert and coherent after her stroke. She then died in her home, while she slept.

White was a pop culture icon well into her 90s long after her Emmy-winning television roles on “The Golden Girls”, and “The Mary Tyler Moore Show,” but she died Dec. 31, three weeks short of her 100th.

White, who was America’s sweetheart at 92, was still playing the role of White in “Hot in Cleveland”, a comedy on television. It was cancelled in 2014.

In 1963, she married Allen Ludden (host of “Password”), her final and third husband.
