WASHINGTON, (Reuters) – President Joe Biden will visit Rev. After new laws passed by some states, activists believe that they will stop Black voters voting in the United States.

His speech, delivered after Vice President Kamala Harris’ at historically Black Clark Atlanta University and Morehouse College, comes as Democrats gird themselves https://www.reuters.com/world/us/first-months-2022-crucial-biden-agenda-november-midterms-loom-2022-01-10 for tough 2020 midterm contests that could strip them of a congressional majority and any chance of federal changes to voting laws.

This is Biden’s second warning in two weeks about America’s democracy. On Jan. 6, he targeted https://www.reuters.com/world/us/biden-call-trump-threat-democracy-us-capitol-attack-anniversary-2022-01-06 Republican former President Donald Trump’s “web of lies” about the 2020 election, blaming him for the deadly attacks on the U.S. Capitol a year before.

Trump claims voter fraud was the reason he lost 7 million votes to Biden in 2020, even though recounts and investigations have not found any evidence. Since then, Republican lawmakers in 19 states passed dozens of laws https://www.reuters.com/world/us/republicans-erect-voting-barriers-politically-crucial-us-states-2021-06-16 making it harder to vote. These measures are criticized by critics as they disproportionately impact minorities.

Biden is seeking to gain public support to reforms to improve voting rights such as the Freedom to Vote Act, and the John Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act. Both of them have failed to meet the opposition of Republicans who say they would place questionable standards on local elections.

According to White House excerpts, Biden will say Tuesday that “The next few weeks, when these bills are up for a vote,” according to reports.

Will we choose democracy or autocracy? Light over shadow? Justice over injustice?” It is clear where I stand. I won’t give up. I won’t give up. I will fight for you and your democracy, against any enemies domestic and foreign. The question remains, where is the United States Senate?

Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell stated Monday that the Democrats wanted to destroy the Senate due to a plot against voting in America. This is obviously fake. It doesn’t exist.”

Biden will be joined in Atlanta by NAACP President Derrick Johnson, and Rev. Al Sharpton in Atlanta, but some advocacy groups have been frustrated with a lack of progress and will boycott https://www.reuters.com/world/us/some-black-hispanic-voting-rights-groups-boycott-bidens-atlanta-speech-2022-01-10 the president’s visit.

We, together with other Georgia-based organizations, informed the president that this isn’t the time, and that we don’t need a photo-op,” April England-Albright said, Atlanta legal director of Black Voters Matter. “There has been no real movement about voting rights legislation.”

Georgia was the battleground state of 2020. Democrats were able to win two key U.S. Senate seats through runoff elections in January 2021. Later in the year, the state legislature approved sweeping voting restrictions https://www.reuters.com/world/us/big-changes-under-georgias-new-election-law-2021-06-14. The Justice Department sued, saying the law infringes the rights https://www.reuters.com/legal/government/us-sue-georgia-over-restrictive-new-state-voting-law-source-2021-06-25 of Black voters.

King, who was an advocate for voting reforms, civil rights, and equal opportunity in the South segregated South, died in 1968. A national U.S. holiday is observed on Jan. 17. Democrats set this holiday to mark the deadline for taking action regarding voting rights.

According to sources familiar with the matter, Biden and Chuck Schumer, the U.S. Senate Majority leader, have been working for months on a strategy that would allow them to pass legislation to expand early voting in those states where there has been racial discrimination at polls.

A White House official stated that Biden and Democrats believe federal legislation should be passed.

Biden will support changing filibuster https://www.reuters.com/article/us-usa-congress-biden-filibuster-idUSKBN2JK1L8 rules https://www.reuters.com/world/us/what-is-us-senate-filibuster-why-is-everyone-talking-about-it-2021-10-06 that currently require 60 senators to support most legislation, the White House has said, but those changes do not have the support of all Democratic lawmakers.
