REUTERS/Lucas Jackson/File PhotoNEW YORK, Reuters – Citigroup Inc announced Tuesday it would end its Citibanamex consumer bank business in Mexico. This will bring an end to a nearly two-decade-old retail venture that was its last outside consumer banking venture.
Citi announced that its consumer banking business will be centered on global wealth and payments, lending, and an aggressive retail presence in the U.S.
Exit does not contain Citigroup The country’s institution business (NYSE:).
Jane Fraser, chief executive officer of the bank said that it was in accordance with her “strategy renewal” process. She also included exits from Asia-based consumer businesses.
Fraser served as CEO before moving on to the Mexico Business and Citigroup’s global consumer banking. She was responsible for leveraging the investments made by the bank to rehabilitate the Mexico consumer market, formerly known as Banamex.
Citigroup’s poor investments returns frustrate institutional investors who have been calling for Citibanamex to be discontinued.
The bank didn’t estimate what the company might get in the sale or the costs of the exit. The company currently has approximately $4 billion in tangible common equity.
Citigroup stated that it anticipates freeing approximately $7 billion in tangible common equity through its Asia exits.
